18 Bookshelves With Ladders That Look Amazing

------- NEW PODCAST -------

Maria started a new podcast about simple living, faith, decluttering, etc.

We could all use a hand, or in this case, a step, when reaching for our uppermost shelves. Fortunately, having bookshelves with ladders eliminates the hassle and makes storing and accessing our things a breeze.

So, check out our collection of 18 bookshelves with ladder designs that will take your interior to new heights (literally and aesthetically!)

Bookshelf Above Wardrobe

Our first design is found in a compact bedroom where the top of the wardrobe becomes a mini library that also opens up to a hidden storage compartment.

The design also showcases different storage options for your wardrobe so you can maximize the entire space.

Not only that, but you get an efficient ladder system that lets you wheel it over to wherever you need it to be.

Next up is this innovative wooden design!

It integrates the ladder into the layers by having smaller wooden shelves act as stepping stools and additional compartments.

It lets you navigate the upper shelves with ease but also leads to the attic, making it a truly multifunctional feature!

Although it is a clever design, there is the risk of the shelves being slippery when held onto. So, reinforce the grip of the steps with rubber or any other non-slip material.

Rooms With Slanted Ceilings

Now, we step into this bright and refreshing living area that proudly boasts several skylights and a slanted shelf design.

The design is a great way of utilizing the space in a room with a slanted ceiling and for framing around the TV.

Actually, you could build the shelves all the way into the corner of the ceiling to use every inch of the space but you’d also need a taller ladder for that.

In this instance, we can find what looks like a loft dedicated solely to books, which is another genius way of incorporating a bookshelf into a room with a slanted ceiling.

This design lets you allow more of your floor space for furniture and decor while you maintain tons of storage up top.

I recommend getting a collapsible ladder so that you can tuck it away when not in use.

Black-And-White Design

In this contemporary space, an elegant black-and-white scheme adorns the room. The motif is also exhibited in the massive bookshelf and ladder design.

Aside from the standard bookshelf and ladder combination, you can also add light fixtures to accentuate the area.

The lights won’t just illuminate the shelves but they can establish a different ambiance, depending on their setting and orientation.

Here, a colorful room filled with plants and patterns displays our next bookshelf and ladder design.

The ladder is also your way to the loft area! Just scooch it over and you can climb up with ease.

I just love this full-wall bookshelf that you can enjoy from the ground floor and while relaxing in the loft.

We also have an elegant and more modern version of the design. With fewer colors and patterns, but a more streamlined layout, you’re left with a sleeker aesthetic.

It still has an abundance of luscious green plants and an intricately detailed carpet to give character and life to the space.

You can also opt for a bookshelf with glass doors to go with the rest of the room.

Rustic Library

Cozying things up is this wooden oasis. The comfy abode has a noteworthy feature surrounding its window: a full-wall bookshelf!

The design adds function to the walls around your window and frames the structure beautifully.

If you were to decorate the space, I recommend adding a few plants to complement the natural materials used.

Now this design has it all: shelves lining the walls, ceiling, and entryway, a cushy reading nook, and of course, a wooden ladder.

This design also thought of where you’re going to read your books and not just where to store them.

Add more pillows and an extra fluffy blanket in the nook to make every reading experience a relaxing and comfy one!

White Bookshelves With Wooden Ladders

Perhaps you’d like a cleaner design, well then, we’ve got you with these prospects. Here are a few white bookshelves with wooden ladder options.

It still has that rustic charm, just paired with a sleeker, traditional bookshelf layout.

If your shelves are too spacious to neatly keep your books, get organizers or containers to help arrange them better and optimally fill up the space.

Here’s a smaller and more straightforward option. It’s your standard white bookshelf with a dainty wooden ladder.

It’s best suited for smaller spaces and if you don’t want an L-shaped design.

I suggest customizing the rails to go all the way to the corner of the bookshelf. That way, you can get the ladder out of the way when not in use by putting it on one end of the structure.

Narrow Entryway Design

We can give you narrow entryway storage solutions too! Spatial restrictions aren’t going to stop us from presenting you with more smart storage ideas.

This eccentric entryway is filled with style and storage–perfect for small spaces!

One other way of enhancing tight areas is by embellishing the spaces higher up like the ceiling. It doesn’t take up too much room and the right light fixture can also be a statement piece.

White Minimalist Designs

Let’s move on to some immaculate minimalist designs. There’s no way you can mess up with an all-white layout!

If you want a simple and safe design for a clean and humble aesthetic–this is for you!

While this design is more fitting for the traditional interior, you can still make a few modifications such as adding railings and wheels for the ladder. This will make moving it much easier.

In this example, there’s a taller bookshelf which suits the higher ceiling better. It can also keep more books and display more items.

Jazz up the shelves by placing more houseplants and home decor on a few layers. It’ll help break the monotony of the aesthetic.

Don’t forget to close the curtains when it gets too bright! You wouldn’t want your books in direct sunlight since they could get damaged.

Industrial Designs

On the other hand, you can consider sprucing up your interior by adding more contrast with an industrial theme.

For a quick and easy way to do so, use a lot of black, metals, and dark wood in the design.

Don’t worry about it being too gloomy since you can also have glass doors and windows to let in some light.

This modern living space showcases another industrial bookcase and ladder design which is a tad brighter than the previous option.

For interiors with darker colors and more contrast, lighting will be your best friend. So, highlight your bookshelf with an LED strip and downlights on the ceiling above it.

Not only does it make the feature more eye-catching but by making it well-lit, you can grab what you’re reaching for quicker.

Living Area With An Indoor Tree

bright living room with bookshelves

Take a look at this breathtaking living room. With tall glass windows, a high ceiling, and a towering wooden bookshelf–you’re in for a spacious treat!

Another notable feature of this room is its greenery. A trailing plant hangs from the bookshelf and a small tree sits in the corner to create this natural space.

I love how open the design is too. It lets in a ton of natural light to add to the spacious feel and lessen the need for more light fixtures.

White Shelves And Pink Ladder

Last on our list is this youthful design with a pop of pink! If your little girl is a bookworm, this would be perfect for her bedroom.

Don’t be intimidated by the vibrant color, the design is quite easy to achieve. Just get a classic full-wall bookshelf and a ladder. You can buy one in a vivid hue or paint it yourself!

I suggest that you put glass doors on a few compartments where they can store their more valuable items.
