Murphy Bed Kit – Build your own bed

If you are considering building your own DIY Murphy bed you need to have the right equipment.

The kits we recommend all have all the hardware you need so you only need to find some proper wood and the right tools.

It is a great DIY project and will save you a lot of money.

We built our own DIY homemade Murphy bed a long time ago and we are very pleased with the result.

Let’s start by taking a look at a cool sideways-mounted twin bed.

We love the Lori Bed company. They are really great guys that we have gotten to know over the years:

This model kit is found here where you can also see prices and options – READ BELOW TO GET THIS SPECIAL PRICE:

PS: We asked Lori Beds about a discount for our readers. They were kind enough to offer a $100 discount to you guys! When you use the link above with the discount code “GODOWNSIZE100” you automatically get the discount!

They also have a regular Murphy bed for a couple that is very stylish and affordable. This model comes in different models:

A REALLY great and affordable option if you’re looking to build and assemble everything yourself to save money!

Easy DIY Murphy Bed Hardware

I recommend purchasing a complete Murphy bed hardware kit with pistons, locks, and brackets etc.

These things are, for the most parts, not possible to buy at the hardware stores. And in a complete kit, you know you have everything you need.

1) This Hardware Kit From Amazon

Amazon has the cheapest hardware kits we could find. They seem alright. We have not tested these specifically. The next kit we recommend (from Rockler) we have tested and it works great!

Here are some cheap Murphy bed kits at Amazon

When you buy their Murphy bed kit, you get all the hardware you need and a very thorough guide.

I am pretty handy, but when working with things that flip and have to be weight adjusted (and very importantly: not fall on my head!) I like the guidance I can get:)

They tell you what you need to know.

They have several models. The main difference is the way it is mounted (sideways or vertical).

2) These Kits From Rockler

These are the ones we have used for our Murphy bed:

See the hardware kit here.

This kit contains:

  • Legs
  • Locking Mechanism
  • Pistons
  • Hinges
  • Building Guide (not for our model though but for a simple model.

They have hardware kits for:

  1. Twin Murphy Beds (horizontal and vertical)
  2. Queen size Murphy Beds

This is the bed I built with my wife. We have been using it for more than 7 years now and it works perfectly.

You can read more here about how we built this bed. There are also plans you can get if you want to build a similar model.

We LOVE our Murphy bed and we couldn’t have built it without the hardware kit with hinges, pistons, locking mechanism, and legs.

We have hung a beautiful picture on the outer side of the bed, build the base for a sofa in front of the bed or create a built-in look by building bookshelves over or next to the bed.

You can see the wall here when the Murphy bed is folded up. That’s me to the left on the picture and Maria’s sitting next to me.

She designed the bed and the daybed in front of it.

Online stores with Murphy beds

If you are not up for building your own Murphy bed there are many great options for getting a good solid bed online.

These are the stores we recommend. They all have excellent service and they will ship the bed directly to your door. That’s important because a Murphy bed system is not easy to move and transport!

Let’s discuss why we want a Murphy bed and what the main benefits are.

How hard is it to build a Murphy bed yourself?

It might seem like a big project but with the right Murphy bed kit, you can easily build the bed yourself. And as you can see with the prices above (the list of stores) there is a lot of money to save.

The ready-made bed systems are expensive and they are not really better than what you can build yourself when you use the right hardware kit.

We built a rather complicated model (which we designed ourselves!) and we spent a week doing it.

We had access to proper tools and we built it at my dad in law’s workshop. He’s a carpenter and Maria has definitely inherited her father’s skills. She was in charge of the project and I just helped her.

You can notice here how she built in storage behind the bed. These two white cabinets can hold all our winter clothes and our skiing gear.

Homemade Murphy Bed

Id’ say that anyone can do it. You might need some help from a handy person if you are not used to working with wood and carpentry.

But if you have built anything from wood before you can also build the bed frame and mount it up against the outer frame.

And then you are almost done and you will just have to mount it properly against the wall.

Why your next bed should be a Murphy bed

A Murphy bed is an investment. It gives you an extra room – as your bedroom can double function as an office, hobby room etc.

So why not get an easy-to-install Murphy bed kit, and let your next bed be a Murphy bed? when you look at it this way every Murphy bed is cheap, as it gives you so much more than a cool bed 🙂

A short background of the Murphy bed

The Murphy bed was invented as a solution to this exact problem. In early 1900, William L. Murphy and his wife lived in San Francisco in a small one bedroom apartment.

William wanted space to entertain his friends, and of course, the bed was the item to get rid of.

He designed the first wall bed and later patented the idea. His family has had the Murphy bed in production ever since.
