Ever thought about turning old pallets into awesome garden projects?

No matter the size of your outdoor area—whether it’s a tiny balcony, a sprawling backyard, or something in between—these pallet projects are here to help you make the most of your space and let your creativity run wild outdoors.

Outdoor Bar

Pallets are often readily available for free or at a low cost, making them an affordable material for DIY projects like building a bar.

Pallet wood also has a rustic and weathered look that adds character to outdoor settings.

Feel free to adjust the size, shape, and configuration of the bar to fit your garden space and personal style.

For lighting, you can use solar-powered lights embedded in mason jars or hanging lanterns for an eco-friendly lighting solution.

Vertical Gardens

Vertical herb planters like this one maximize growing space, making them ideal for small gardens, balconies, or patio areas where horizontal space is limited. They allow you to grow a variety of herbs in a compact footprint!

It’s best to choose a variety of culinary herbs such as basil, mint, rosemary, thyme, parsley, and cilantro for your vertical planter box.

Mix different herbs with contrasting leaf shapes and textures to create visual interest.

No need to bend down or reach far!

For a fun look, use colorful planters like ceramic, terracotta, or metal pots in bright colors that go well with your garden. Arrange them nicely on the pallet structure to make it look balanced and attractive.

Meanwhile, wall-mounted vertical planters are perfect for balconies with limited floor space.

You can adjust the size, number of tiers, and arrangement of planters to fit the dimensions of your balcony and your herb-growing needs.

Choose colorful planters or paint the pallets in vibrant hues to add a pop of color to your balcony. You can even coordinate the colors with your existing outdoor decor or balcony furniture to create a cohesive look.

A pallet vegetable garden also adds visual interest and greenery to your garden or outdoor space. It serves both a functional purpose (growing greens) and enhances the aesthetic appeal of the area.

I suggest surrounding the base of the vertical planter box with companion plants such as marigolds, pansies, or ornamental grasses.

Companion planting can attract beneficial insects, add color, and create a harmonious garden environment.

As mentioned earlier, a vertical planter box like the one above also makes it easier for you to access and maintain your vegetables.

You can tend to your plants, water them, and harvest vegetables without bending over, making gardening more comfortable!

Just make sure that the design allows for adequate drainage to prevent waterlogging. Consider adding trellises, cages, or vertical supports for climbing vegetables.

A wall-mounted herb planter box can also add a decorative element to the exterior of your house, creating a charming and inviting atmosphere.

Like in the photo, you can label each herb planter with decorative or functional labels. You can use DIY markers made from painted stones, wooden tags, or small chalkboard signs attached to each pot.

This not only helps identify the herbs but also adds a personalized touch to the garden.

Raised Garden Beds

Pallets can be easily modified to create raised beds of various sizes and shapes to fit your garden space.

You can install decorative edging around the raised bed to define the space and prevent soil erosion.

Use natural materials like stones, bricks, or timber for a rustic look. Apply mulch to the soil surface to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and improve the overall appearance of the garden bed.

Another option is to stack pallets to increase the height of the bed or dismantle them to adjust the dimensions as needed.

This way, you can grow a variety of plants, including vegetables, herbs, flowers, and even small shrubs, in different sections of the garden bed and planter boxes.

Like in the photo, you can also use the space below to keep garbage bins or a small shelf filled with gardening tools.

Moreover, the vertical design of attached planter boxes saves horizontal space, making it suitable for smaller gardens, balconies, or patios where space is limited.

You can also use a variety of containers for the planter boxes, such as painted pots, wooden crates, or repurposed containers.

I think it’s best to customize the appearance of the pallets by staining or painting them with weather-resistant finishes. Choose colors that complement your garden’s aesthetic or match existing outdoor decor.

You can also use a raised garden bed made from pallets as a designated area to store soil, compost, mulch, or other gardening materials. This helps keep your garden supplies neatly organized and easily accessible.

Attach casters or wheels to the bottom to make it mobile. This way, you can easily move the soil to different locations in your garden as needed.

Don’t forget to use labels or markers to identify different types of soil stored in the pallet bed.

Planter Boxes

Pallets can be easily transformed into various shapes and sizes to suit your garden space and planting needs.

You can create rectangular, square, or even vertical planter boxes depending on the plants you want to grow.

Feel free to customize the appearance of the pallet planter box by painting or staining the wood. Choose colors that complement your garden’s color scheme or leave it be for natural wood finishes for a rustic look!

Planter boxes made from pallets can accommodate a wide range of plants, including flowers, herbs, vegetables, succulents, and ornamentals.

You can design different boxes for specific plant types or create a mixed garden display like in the photo above.

Place multiple pallet planter boxes in a row or group them together to create a cohesive garden layout. Experiment with different configurations and spacing to achieve a balanced and harmonious look!

You can also use pallets to create vertical planters by attaching the boxes to walls or staircases! This allows you to maximize space and add height to your garden while showcasing a variety of plants.

From my experience, it’s best to plant a mix of flowering plants, trailing vines, and herbs in the planter box to create a vibrant and diverse garden display.

Choose plants with different colors, textures, and heights to add visual interest.

Meanwhile, raised planter boxes provide excellent drainage and aeration for plants, promoting healthier root growth and reducing the risk of soil compaction.

This creates optimal growing conditions for vegetables, herbs, flowers, and other plants.

Spruce up the planter box with some fun additions like garden ornaments, solar lights, or colorful plant markers. You can also add whimsical touches such as small garden figurines.

Outdoor Table

Turning pallets into a table is a great DIY project that lets you get creative and show off your woodworking skills. It’s a fun way to add a personal touch to your outdoor space!

Prepare the pallets by sanding them to remove rough edges and splinters. Apply a coat of outdoor wood stain or paint to protect the wood from weathering and enhance its appearance.

Choose a color that complements your garden decor.

Plant Stands

A pallet plant stand is a clever way to show off your collection of cacti and succulents while making the most of your garden space.

You can set up the plant stand on your patio, balcony, or nestled around a garden shed to instantly elevate your plant display.

When choosing plants, go for a mix of cacti and succulents with varying shapes, sizes, and textures. Arrange them on the plant stand, grouping similar ones together for a striking visual effect.

You can also easily transform pallets into a ladder-style plant stand with multiple tiers or shelves. You can customize the size and number of shelves to accommodate different types of plants and decor.

It’s up to you if you want to place this against a wall, fence, or freestanding in the garden.

Pick a fun theme for your plant display, like creating a tropical oasis, a charming herb garden, or a cozy cottage-inspired setup.

Grow Bag Garden

Here’s a clever idea – using a pallet, some wood pieces, and heavy-duty caster wheels.

With this, you can move the garden around your driveway to follow the sun for optimal sunlight exposure.

In urban environments, tall buildings often block sunlight, so having a mobile garden that can be maneuvered for better sun exposure is ideal.

You can grow food no matter where you live!

Outdoor Privacy Screens

Combining a privacy screen with a vertical garden serves a dual purpose, adding greenery and beauty to your outdoor space while also providing privacy from neighbors or street views.

To set up your vertical garden on the privacy screen, simply attach planters or grow bags to the pallets using hooks, wire, or brackets. Opt for a mix of plants like trailing vines, succulents, herbs, or ornamental grasses.

Get creative with plant selection by mixing different textures, colors, and sizes!

Here’s another example made of scrap wood and pallet. This one can be used to delineate your indoor and outdoor spaces. You can also use this as a privacy screen for your patio.

Give your privacy screen some extra flair by adding decorative touches like outdoor artwork, hanging lanterns, or string lights.

For an added pop of greenery, place potted plants or decorative sculptures at the base of the screen. This combination of decor will beautifully complement your garden and make your outdoor area feel personalized.

Garden Fences

Besides using pallets for privacy screens, they’re also great for building other types of garden fences like boundary dividers or decorative accent fences.

You can customize pallets easily to make a fence that’s just the right height, width, and style for your garden. Get creative by painting or staining the pallets to match your garden decor and personal taste.

Another cool idea is to encourage climbing plants like vines or ivy to grow on the pallet fence.

You can also attach planter boxes or grow bags to the pallet fences and fill them with a variety of plants such as flowers, herbs, or succulents.

This creates a living fence that adds beauty and greenery to your garden.

I also suggest installing gates or openings within the pallet fence to provide easy access to different parts of the garden. Consider adding hooks or shelves for hanging gardening tools or storing outdoor essentials.

Another great idea is to use the pallet fence to define different areas of your garden, such as a vegetable garden, flower bed, or seating area. This helps organize the space and adds structure to your outdoor layout!

Choose a specific theme for your garden fence, such as rustic farmhouse, cottage garden, or modern chic.

Use coordinating decor, plant choices, and accessories to enhance the overall theme. Have fun experimenting with different elements to achieve the desired look and feel!

Outdoor Signage

Last on our list is outdoor signage that can serve various purposes, from labeling garden areas (like herb gardens, flower beds, or vegetable patches) to adding decorative accents and directional cues.

You can also paint inspirational or motivational quotes on pallet signs to uplift and inspire visitors in your garden!

Use stencils or hand-paint letters on pallet boards for a rustic and charming look.
