35 Tiny Houses With Lofts That Just Work

------- NEW PODCAST -------

Maria started a new podcast about simple living, faith, decluttering, etc.

Tiny houses are all about maximizing space on minimal square footage. Lofts are a great way to add floor space to your tiny home.

I’ve found 35 loft ideas to suit a variety of interior styles – let’s get to it!

Tiny House with Dark Teal Cabinetry

wood and green loftINSTAGRAM @mitchcrafttinyhomes

We’re starting off with this bold natural wood loft. The base of the loft is fitted with simple ceiling lights to illuminate the living area under the loft.

I love how this design integrates different types of wood and exposed brick. The dark teal cupboards pull all the different textures together in a modern farmhouse aesthetic.

For a tiny home, this house has plenty of storage. Take a look at all those drawers and cupboards!

Here is a similar concept with a much darker teal that has olive undertones. But, instead of a bathroom under the loft, this tiny house has a small living room.

As someone who loves to cook, I prefer this design as it has space for a full-size stove and oven. However, I think the previous tiny house has more character.

This home needs some greenery – small trees, hanging plants, or even small potted herbs on the window sill.

Tiny House with Vinyl Record Storage in the Staircase

tiny house with loft and bookshelves stairsINSTAGRAM @tinyhouserealm

We don’t see much of the loft from this angle, but the lighting sure is cozy and inviting. I also love the indoor plants that frame the loft walls and the window.

The vinyl record storage in the staircase is the hero of this design. It’s quirky and practical.

With the stairs to the loft being narrow and steep, the sleek handrail is essential.

Lofts with Cubbies

cubbies with baskets on loftINSTAGRAM @tinyhousemovement

Okay, this door is a showstopper! Wow.

The tiny home, though long and narrow, appears rather spacious with the expanse of white walls and ceiling panels with wooden accents.

The walls of this loft are made using open cubbies and basket drawers. I think this is a clever idea that combines function and decor.

However, just make sure that the shelf is fully secured to the loft for safety.

Here is a more “DIY” feel to the loft cubbies. You can easily make these yourself with some nails and plywood.

Like in the previous image, this tiny house also has storage space under the stairs. Except these drawers are exposed.

I think closed storage is essential with such limited space in a tiny house. It’s all too easy for small spaces like this to feel cluttered quickly.

Loft with Retractable Ladder

loft with foldaway stairsINSTAGRAM @guemes.tinyhouse

This tiny house features mahogany-colored floors and door frames, white cabinets and black furnishings.

A retractable ladder is an excellent idea in small spaces like this. When you don’t need to access the loft, you can push the ladder away giving you more room in the downstairs living area.

I love the pop of earthy colors on the bench backrest. However, I think some greenery would really liven up this space.

“Around the World” Retro Tiny House

loft with painted map ceilingINSTAGRAM @thesunchaser521

Here we have a cute and retro tiny house. The ceiling wallpaper features an old-school world map with colors that tie in with the microwave and mini-fridge.

This loft is easily accessible with the simple stairs on the right. However, without a railing, I would be anxious to sleep up there.

A simple double railing, similar to the pantry or spice rack in the kitchen would suit this aesthetic well.

Wrap-Around Loft

double loft with side catwalkINSTAGRAM @tiny_house_plans

If you’re transitioning into tiny house living, this is the design for you. With a wrap-around loft, it gives a sense of having two stories.

This loft has ample space for beds, books, and clothing storage. In fact, it seems that the far end has a Murphy bed.

Genius!

With some decor and soft furnishings, this tiny house would feel like home in no time at all.

Double Loft with Bridge

loft tiny house with center catwalkINSTAGRAM @tiny.house.tryouts

In this tiny house, we see the bright and airy kitchen with a double-door refrigerator and gas stove. And don’t you just love the coffee bar hidden under the stairs?

But what makes this home truly unique is the bridge that joins two loft spaces.

This is perfect for families with kids, to avoid going up and down stairs too often at night, or roommates who want to leave the downstairs for entertaining.

Here we see the same design concept but from a different angle. You can easily fit two small bedrooms in this tiny house.

The wooden ceiling panels can make a space this small feel pretty dark so good-quality lighting is going to be important. I love this bright modern take on a chandelier.

A good idea would be to install a skylight into this stunning arched ceiling.

Zen-Inspired Tiny House

white tiny house with under loft bathroomINSTAGRAM @hausleintinyhouseco

This tiny house features parallel kitchen counters with a small bathroom at the far end of the space. Up the sleek ladder, you’ll find the loft adorned with a large Buddha statue that contributes to the Zen vibe.

The floating shelf above the large kitchen windows is both decorative and practical. You could use this as a pantry space or as a bookshelf.

And you can never go wrong with hanging plants.

Modern “Tiny Tudor” Interior

This tiny house is a modern take on the Tudor aesthetic with its dark wood floors and cabinets, white walls, and traditional floral rug.

I love that the ladder to this loft is on a rail, meaning you can slide it aside when you don’t need it.

Personally, I think the bright blue wall in the small bathroom is out of place. Perhaps a deeper blue might have worked better.

Beachy Tiny House with Netted Loft

double loft with netINSTAGRAM @tinyhouseaesthetics

Now this is what we mean when we say that tiny houses need to maximize space. This loft leads onto a full-length netted area.

For teens and adults, this is the ultimate chill zone. But if you’ve got small kids, this would make a great playroom.

Beneath the upstairs space, we can see the living area with large stairs leading to the loft. The stairs are pretty deep so that you can fit in a full-size cabinets.

Loft with Plush Rug

loft with crate bookcaseINSTAGRAM @mytinylittlehouse

This loft comfortably fits a single mattress, leaving enough space for box-shelf storage. The plush white rug makes the loft bedroom so inviting.

We can’t see what is behind the loft wall, but judging from the width of the tiny house, you could fit more storage, a beanbag or a tiny bedroom office.

I just love the hanging herbs on the railing below the loft – it brings a bit of nature inside and a beautiful fragrance, too.

Sunlit Tiny House with Wooden Accents

loft with wooden panelingINSTAGRAM @thebradburyproject

This tiny home has such a bright, sunny appeal due to ample windows, and the white walls and counters. We see an L-shaped kitchen with white subway tiles and floating shelves.

The curved stairs lead up to a gorgeous semi-private bedroom loft. I love the thin wooden slats that are somewhere in between a wall and a railing.

I see a little fireplace that is used as a small side table – very cute. But, if you live in a colder climate you’ll want that fireplace hooked up to a chimney.

Here’s another tiny home with large windows to let in as much sunlight as possible.

Instead of an L-shaped counter, this has a galley kitchen with deep storage compartments under the stairs. This tiny house also has a small breakfast nook where you can enjoy your morning coffee while basking in the sunlight.

The only thing I’d change here is to make more steps, they are just a bit too far apart for daily use.

living room loftINSTAGRAM @tinyhousetalk

Next up is this chic house. A small living room is atop the loft, and a bedroom nook is below.

Out of our three sunny tiny homes, this has the least counter and storage space. So some storage bins-come-ottoman could be useful in the living room.

I must say, I love the combination of the white paneling and black wrought iron railing. It’s sleek and feels very clean.

Mezzanine Loft

living room loft with bed underneathINSTAGRAM @tiny.house.tryouts

This tiny house features a mezzanine living room loft on the upper level, and below you can see the bedroom with a barndoor-style sliding door.

I really like this design as when you’re in the kitchen you would still feel in the same space as your guests in the living room.

This tiny house lacks smart storage solutions. The kitchen shelves could do with some labeled acrylic or pale-colored bins to better optimize the small space.

lofted living room with cabinets and pullout table underneathINSTAGRAM @tinyhousedistrict

Here is another mezzanine loft concept. Except in this design, the upper level is more secluded with a solid wooden half-wall.

There is also a tiny breakfast nook with a slide-out table. This is the kind of functional furniture I love in small spaces.

To liven up the home, I would include a small tree in the living room and some artwork around the TV.

Loft Bed in Tiny House

loft bed with closet underneathINSTAGRAM @tatloconcepts

Here we have a white and cream Scandi-style tiny house. This bedroom is more of a loft bed than a loft, with a white couch and wardrobe underneath.

But the changing room area beneath the loft is what really stands out. There is tons of storage space for clothes, shoes, bags, and probably linen, too.

I love the addition of the tree in the narrow entryway. However, I think this space could do with a bit more personality – some wall art or even fairy lights around the loft railing.

Chill-Out Nook in Loft

couch and cabinets under the loftINSTAGRAM @buildtinyhomes

Here we have a dining area with a deep turquoise-colored cushion on the bench. The bench can be pulled out to use as a bed. Above this, we see a series of cabinets the full width of the house.

And above this is the cutest little chill-zone loft. Perfect for coffee, reading, or even an art space!

What really catches my eye is the chopping board that fits on top of the kitchen sink. This extends the counter space and hides away the sink (and dirty dishes!).

Timber-Framed Loft

loft bed with compact storageINSTAGRAM @tinyhomewildadventures

Alright, now we are getting really cozy in this timber-framed loft. Beautifully crafted cathedral-esque timber arches frame this loft.

This loft has been designed cleverly with those deep drawers the length of the bed width. Very good space optimization

The quilt on the bed is the perfect touch, adding a homely feel to the space. The cords at the end of the bed are a little too messy for my liking and need some organization.

wooden tiny house loft with lightings

Here’s another timber loft, though in this design we get a glimpse of the whole tiny house.

Let’s start at the top – we have an A-frame loft with skylights on either side of the angled ceiling. Then, a ladder connects the loft to the lower level of this cozy cabin

At the far end of the house is a small kitchen and at the bottom of the ladder is a living room with a blue-gray couch and fireplace.

I think the lighting choices are superb – the low-level lighting really helps to make this space feel warm and inviting.

Mid-Level Platform Bed

loft bed with sliding doors cabinetINSTAGRAM @bedrooms_of_insta

A mid-level platform bed sits on this mezzanine-style loft. A short flight of stairs brings you to the living room with a black couch and the kitchen.

I love the gallery wall. It is a great way to bring in character without cluttering surfaces with frames and artwork.

The nightstand next to the bed is a really great choice as there is space beneath it to store a basket of books or crafts.

Compact Double Roomsloft with double bedINSTAGRAM @aussietinyhouses

This tiny home has taken space optimization to the next level. Beneath the loft, we see a dining area with storage benches. The stairs leading up to the loft double up as storage cubbies.

And in the loft, we see two full-size beds!

I just love how some of the stair-cubbies have been used for decor. It’s a good reminder that space optimization doesn’t have to be boring.

Windows, Windows, and more Windows!

loft tiny house with bed underneathINSTAGRAM @tinyhouseperfect

Windows in the loft, windows below the loft, and the most gorgeous service window in the kitchen. This tiny home is airy and light.

In such small homes, they can become stuffy and humid pretty easily. Having so many windows helps the air circulate.

The Birds of Paradise tree in the loft is the perfect addition to this modern-rustic home.

dark tone tiny house loft with lightings

Here we have a more industrial tiny house, also with plenty of windows and a skylight in the loft. Below the loft is a galley kitchen leading out to a charming backyard patio.

This industrial design is very dark so all the windows and lighting is necessary to open up the space, visually.

I love the exposed pendant lights hanging in the loft. However, if you’re blessed with extra height, watch your head as you move up and down the stairs.

tiny house loft with lightings

Lastly, we have this almost double storey tiny house with an apex ceiling. Below the loft is a U-shaped kitchen that features a knife block and countertop spice rack.

The walls and ceiling are made of treated plywood. With the right lighting, like we see here, plywood can look intentional and stylish. But, with harsh lighting, it could look unfinished and makeshift.

While I absolutely love the leather ottoman as a couch, I would have placed it under the window so that it is easier to go up into the kitchen.

Tiny House with Cast Iron Fireplace

colorful tiny house with loftINSTAGRAM @tinyhouserealm

Here we have another tiny house with teal cabinets. There’s a compact living room in the loft, some standard-sized stairs, a stunning tall cabinet, and the hero of this house – the large closed combustion fireplace.

I think the placement of this fireplace is ideal. You’d be able to feel its warmth from the living room and kitchen/bedroom area.

Additionally, the long chimney would also radiate heat into the upper areas of the loft.

white tiny house with loft

In this version, we have not one but two fireplaces. Downstairs there is a double-sided fireplace and up in the loft is a cast iron fireplace.

I love the styling of this house, the all-white interior with a fusion of rustic, modern, and vintage decor.

However, I’d bring out the Hide rug a bit more to make the living room more cozy.

wooden loft with kitchen underneath

Here is another tiny house with unpainted plywood and shiplap paneling. It has a rustic Nordic vibe with its neutrals, pendant light and armchair which is reminiscent of driftwood.

The closed-combustion fireplace chimney also extends right up to the ceiling of this double-story house.

The loft features a mattress for a futon-style bed. Its earthy and natural but I think it could do with a bookshelf for some character and color.

Open Closet and Working Space Under Loft Bed

open closet and working space under loft bedINSTAGRAM @shltr

In this example, we get a real sense of what it would be like to live in a tiny house. And with this design and styling, it works!

Up the ladder is a loft bed with a low bookshelf which makes the room semi-private. Below the loft is a clothes rail, gorgeous midcentury sideboard, and pegboard tool storage on the wall.

There is even enough space for a sofa and armchair!

Under-the-Stairs Storage

loft with hanging plantsINSTAGRAM @livingbiginatinyhouse

Next up we have a narrow kitchen with a single counter that leads to a small bathroom with shower. The stairs will take you up to a cozy and private loft bedroom.

The use of the stairs for stationery and book storage is a novel idea (pun intended).

For me, the hanging plants on the wooden rod are what make this tiny house special. It’s a neat way of using indoor plants as art.

Indoor-Outdoor Tinyhouse

full glass window tiny house with loft

Imagine staying in this forest escape with indoor-outdoor space.

Bliss.

Up the ladder is a loft bedroom with windows across the full wall giving an incredible view from the bed. Down the ladder is a very compact kitchen and living room with a fireplace.

While I love this design, it does need some railings for safety, both upstairs and on the lower floor.

Neutrals and Natural Wood

wooden tiny house with loft

Last on our list of tiny houses with lofts is this natural and neutral tiny house with plywood and shiplap paneling.

This loft is large enough for a full-size bedroom. Underneath the loft is a good-sized kitchen with three stools at a countertop dining area.

All this tiny house needs is a soft rug, perhaps in deep greens or oranges, to make the living room a little more vibrant.
